Terry Pratchett famously referenced the saying "May you live in interesting times" in his novel Interesting Times (1994), part of the Discworld series. The phrase is often quoted as an ancient Chinese curse, and while there is no historical evidence supporting that origin, it still feels like pretty strong curse.
We are certainly living in interesting times now and going through things humanity never experienced before to the same intensity. And just like in Discworld series increasingly seems like the world is populated by witches, wizards, vampires, golems, dwarfs and elves. Spoiler alert, elves in Discworld are baddies, and not kind, ethereal beings of grace and beauty often seen in other stories. Instead, they are a dangerous, manipulative and utterly malicious ruling class
In the Discworld novels, elves are typically associated with the Fae world, a place beyond reality that occasionally intersects with the Discworld. They enter through portals, usually during times of magical or emotional turmoil, and they feed on negative emotions, particularly fear and despair. They see humans and other creatures as playthings, and their interaction with the world is mostly destructive.
A bit too close to reality?
So how can we stay calm and collected when the world seems to be on fire?
In a world filled with unpredictability, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed, anxious, and disconnected. Whether facing global crises, personal challenges, or periods of self-doubt, maintaining a sense of stability is crucial for mental, emotional, and physical well-being. Grounding is the practice of staying connected to the present moment, our bodies, and the Earth. By cultivating grounding habits, we can navigate uncertainty with greater resilience and clarity. Below are several powerful grounding techniques that can help restore balance and inner peace.

1. Earthing: Connecting with Nature
One of the simplest yet most profound ways to ground yourself is through earthing, or direct contact with the Earth’s surface. Walking barefoot on grass, soil, or sand allows the body to absorb the Earth's natural energy, reducing stress and promoting a sense of calm. Scientific studies suggest that earthing helps regulate the nervous system, reduces inflammation, and improves sleep quality. Whether sitting under a tree, gardening, or simply touching natural elements, reconnecting with nature is an effective way to anchor yourself in the present moment.
2. Meditation and Breathwork
Meditation is a powerful tool for grounding, allowing you to cultivate mindfulness and inner stillness. Practices like body scan meditation, guided imagery, or simply focusing on the rhythm of your breath can help centre your mind. Box breathing (inhale for four seconds, hold for four seconds, exhale for four seconds, hold for four seconds) is an excellent method for calming anxiety and bringing awareness to the present.
Pairing meditation with affirmations such as “I am safe, I am present, I am grounded” reinforces a sense of stability, even in chaotic times. The more we practice mindfulness, the easier it becomes to return to a grounded state when faced with uncertainty.
3. Crystals for Grounding
Many people find comfort in using crystals for grounding and energetic stability. Some of the best grounding stones include:
Black Tourmaline – Absorbs negative energy and provides protection.
Hematite – Strengthens focus and mental clarity.
Smoky Quartz – Helps dispel anxiety and emotional blockages.
Red Jasper – Encourages stability, endurance, and connection to the Earth.
Holding or wearing these crystals, placing them near your workspace, or using them during meditation can enhance feelings of security and balance. Typically we would choose clear crystals or black crystals. Clear quartz is always a safe bet when it comes to start your journey in using crystals.
4. The Power of Social Connection
While solitude can be healing, too much isolation can lead to feelings of disconnection. Socializing—whether through deep conversations, laughter, or shared activities—helps us feel anchored in our relationships and community. Even in difficult times, making an effort to check in with loved ones, join support groups, or engage in social activities fosters a sense of belonging and emotional resilience.
5. Expressing Through Art and Creativity
Engaging in creative expression can be a deeply grounding experience. Whether it’s painting, writing, playing music, or dancing, artistic activities help channel emotions into something tangible. Creativity is an outlet for processing uncertainty, offering a way to externalize thoughts and feelings that might otherwise feel overwhelming. The act of creating keeps us rooted in the present, providing both a distraction from anxiety and a means of self-discovery.
6. Prioritizing Rest and Relaxation
Uncertainty often leads to stress, which can disrupt sleep and overall well-being. Establishing a restorative self-care routine is essential for staying grounded. This includes:
Setting a consistent sleep schedule
Taking breaks from screens and social media
Practicing progressive muscle relaxation before bed
Drinking soothing herbal teas (like chamomile or valerian root)
Rest isn’t just about sleep—it’s about allowing yourself moments of stillness without guilt. When the world feels overwhelming, giving yourself permission to slow down is an act of self-care and self-preservation.
7. Physical Movement and Exercise
Physical activity is one of the most effective ways to release pent-up energy and restore a sense of control. Whether it’s yoga, dancing, running, or simply stretching, movement brings awareness to the body and helps process emotions. Yoga poses like Mountain Pose, Child’s Pose, and Tree Pose are particularly grounding, fostering balance and stability.
For those who prefer a more high-energy approach, activities like martial arts, weightlifting, or even hiking can provide a sense of empowerment and grounding through physical exertion.
8. Rituals and Daily Routines
Creating personal rituals can provide structure and stability in times of uncertainty. This can be as simple as morning journaling, lighting a candle with intention, or practicing gratitude before bed. Rituals give the mind a sense of order, making it easier to stay present and navigate challenges with greater clarity.
Developing a daily grounding routine—such as combining morning breathwork, an afternoon walk, and an evening meditation—helps maintain stability even in turbulent times.
9. Nourishing the Body with Grounding Foods
The foods we eat can also impact how grounded we feel. Eating root vegetables like carrots, potatoes, and beets, as well as consuming protein-rich meals, helps strengthen the body’s connection to the Earth. Warm, hearty meals like soups and stews are comforting and nourishing, providing physical and emotional stability.
Additionally, staying hydrated and limiting excessive caffeine or sugar intake can prevent energy imbalances and mood fluctuations.
10. Practicing Gratitude and Perspective Shifting
Uncertainty often breeds fear, but practicing gratitude can shift our perspective toward a more grounded mindset. Keeping a gratitude journal or simply taking a few moments each day to acknowledge what you are thankful for can help counteract feelings of instability.
When facing uncertainty, remind yourself: “I have faced challenges before, and I have overcome them.” Trust in your resilience and adaptability.
11. Seeking Professional Counselling and Support
In times of great uncertainty, seeking help from professional counsellors, therapists, or support groups can be a valuable grounding tool. Mental health professionals offer guidance, coping strategies, and a safe space to process emotions. Therapy provides clarity and emotional resilience, helping individuals navigate difficult situations with greater understanding and support. Whether through in-person counselling or online services, professional help is always available to those in need, and reaching out can be an empowering step toward stability and healing.
12. social media breaks.
Whether it’s a month. Week. Afternoon. Or an hour.
Switch it off. There is a huge power of switching it off and turning it on again. It worked for computers in early 2000s and works like a pure magic now!
Staying grounded in times of uncertainty is not about eliminating challenges but about cultivating stability, resilience, and inner peace despite them. By incorporating grounding practices such as earthing, meditation, crystals, socializing, creative expression, rest, movement, daily rituals, nourishing foods, and gratitude, we create a foundation that allows us to navigate life's uncertainties with grace and strength.
Ultimately, grounding is a lifelong practice—one that requires consistency, self-awareness, and an open heart. By anchoring ourselves in the present and embracing the tools available to us, we can find balance, even in the most unpredictable times.
